WordPress is a free, flexible, and powerful blogging platform and content management system that is used to thousands of websites. Up to 25% of sites on the internet are built with it. WordPress is very simple to use for novices, and has endless options for customization.
Thousands of developers have created themes, widgets, plugins and other customizations so that any skill level of user can have unique and professional sites for much cheaper than hiring a developer themselves.
Dixie State University uses WordPress for it’s content management system for several reasons.
- First, as a content management system, it keep our “content” – text, images, etc – separate from the design. This makes it relatively easy to “re-skin” the site with a new design every few years as needed.
- Second, the strong developer community for WordPress means that we can have more features on our site than if we had to develop everything ourselves. This community also adds a level of security as hundreds of people are working to make WordPress more secure every days.
- Third is ease of use. The WYSIWYG editor is easy for novices to use, and even the text-based page editor is familiar to users with previous blogging experience (sites such as LiveJournal, Blogger, Tumblr, Dreamwidth, etc, have similar interfaces).
